A ceremonial event to mark the start of King Charles III’s reign, took place in Durham Market Place on Sunday (11 September 2022) at 1pm. The High Sheriff of County Durham Mrs Shona Harper-Wilkes, read the Ascension Proclamation at 1pm on the balcony of Durham Town Hall, where hundreds of people gathered to witness this historic event.
The Ascension Proclamation Ceremony was opened by the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham Mrs Sue Snowdon. The Proclamation was read by the High Sheriff of County Durham and prayers were read by the High Sheriff's chaplain the Reverend Peter Fisher and the Right Reverend the Bishop of Durham.
